If I consume something with a lot of HFCS in it (like US made sodas or many ice creams) I get a congested, flem loaded back of throat reaction. My wife says the gag reflex this inspires makes me sound like a dying cat! So this will happen for example if I drink a Coke but not a Mexican Coke with cane sugar in it instead of HFCS. Any comment on this physical reaction? (It sure has taught me to avoid HFCS!)

Dr. Gangemi, i am a 19 year old college student that's very low on cash. My family have a history of stroke, diabetes, hearts disease and all the related complications that comes with it. I try my best to read about these things and share with my friends and family, although it is very discouraging because it's hard to avoid those things. I stop eating meat because of heard of Tyson. i try to buy more organic product with the USDA approved stamp on it. But recently i started suspecting that some of those product might not be organic. Most organic product are too expansive for my income. Vegetables and soy are good for people. So now think that there is no such thing as healthy food in America! I'm trap. Any advice?

Thanks Jessica. Check out the Paleo book I recommend in this post - great desserts in there that my kids (and even their junk-food-eating-friends) love!

Just stumbled onto your website while researching carb-sensitivity/intolerance, and I'm greatly enjoying your articles! I've been quite fascinated with HFCS since o-chem; and regularly feel like I'm waging a battle as I try to raise a small child on an unprocessed-food diet. Your post like another "hoorah!" to encourage me to keep pressing on.

I also really enjoyed Dr. Robert Lustig's 2009 lecture on fructose.

Thanks, but honestly that probably won't happen. Writing the articles/posts often takes a significant amount of time - which is why you don't see daily or even weekly updates - depending on my schedule. A post like this one took several hours to comprise the information, verify its accuracy, write, edit, and post. Several meaning 5-7 hours typically I think this one was actually close to 8 hours. Adding in "research" would add on even more. Plus, a lot of what I write about is clinical observations, experience, and stuff that hasn't been fully "studied."

Glad you like that site!
