July 2009 Update

Soon after writing last month's e-newsletter (click to read) regarding sunscreen, I came upon a company that actually understands how sunscreens work and why most of them do more harm than good. UV Natural is a product that blocks UVA, UVB, and UVC rays, is 100% natural, and most importantly, is not photoreactive. Photoreactive ingredients such as uncoated zinc oxide and titanium oxides found in many products are known to produce free radicals and damage DNA, as discussed in the last article.

** Update Summer 2009 - Soleo is a company also dedicated to healthy sunscreen, and more readily available in the US. **

UV Natural and Soleo contain no synthetic ingredients or harmful lipids, such as partially hydrogenated oils. They contain antioxidants and natural oils that not only protect the skin, but also help with vitamin D absorption. The zinc in is coated as to act as physical and chemical sun protector, by deflecting the sun's rays. As with anything you put on your skin, (and therefore absorb into your body), it should be good enough for you to eat, and this stuff is.

Additionally, none of the common cancer-provoking and estrogen mimicking agents typically seen in sunscreen are used, such as the following:
Benzophenone
Homosalate
Octyl Methoxycinnamate
4 Methyl-benzylidene camphor
Ocryl-dimethyl-PABA
Parabens (commonly methyl and propyl)

Currently UV Natural and Soleo are still hard to find. We have some 15 SPF of UV Natural remaining in the office and you can go to Soleo's web site to check for a store near you or order on-line. http://www.soleousa.com
